Empowering small donors and voters

My vision is for the voices of voters and small donors to truly be empowered and in control of our democracy, made possible by a system of public funding such as the one created by the Fair Elections Now Act.

We have so many challenges and so much progress to make, on the economy, affordable health care, energy and climate, education, and more.  There's no question about that.  For too long, though, the wealthy and powerful special interests have not only had a seat at the table in these debates -- they've been paying for the table itself, by spending so heavily on our candidates' campaigns and lobbying in Washington.  Too many decisions favor them over the majority of us.

If we want permanent and lasting change, we need to cut special interests out of the dominant role in our political debates and put voters and small donors front and center -- which starts with who pays for our elections.  Candidates for the presidency and especially for Congress who can run on small donations amplified with limited public funds will be beholden to us, the people, and we need a system that lets them do it.

This needs to be one of the first problems we address, if we're going to truly and effectively address so many other challenges -- health care, energy, etc -- to the greatest benefit of all Americans.
